The aforementioned movies were loved by both critics and audiences alike. The Zachery Levi-led film pulled in $366 million at the box office. Rotten Tomatoes has also since ranked the film as one of the best superhero movies of all time with a 90% critic score. Because of Shazam!’s immediate runaway success back in April 2019, the studio decided to greenlight a sequel almost immediately. Two years later, that sequel has finally finished filming.
Don’t expect Shazam! 2 to premiere anytime soon
Shazam! Fury of the Gods kicked off principal photography back on May 26 before wrapping up filming just as August came to an end. Of course, there’s still a long way to go. Fury of the Gods isn’t scheduled to launch until Summer 2023. There remains a two-year wait until audiences can finally get a chance to watch the movie in theaters. The silver lining here is that Sanberg has nearly two years to edit the film, add visual effects, and even do reshoots. With that said, it appears that sleep isn’t on the menu for Sandberg anytime soon. The director still has to prepare for DC FanDome 2021. Among other things, fans are expecting Warner Bros. Pictures to drop behind-the-scenes footage of the Shazam! sequel at the said event.
— DC (@DCComics) August 31, 2021 Unfortunately, it appears that the DCEU is keeping things under lock and key. So far, no specific plot details for Fury of the Gods have leaked. DC and Warner Bros. have yet to reveal anything either. If it’s any consolation, there are a few things about the upcoming DCEU movie. For example, Djimon Honsou’s Wizard Shazam is probably coming back. We’re just not quite sure yet how we’ll return. Will he help Shazam! out? Or is his appearance a hallucination? Perhaps it’s a flashback? Asher Angel’s Billy Batson will also get some much-needed help for the second movie, as per the earlier costume reveal. Here’s to hoping that we get more details about Fury of the Gods soon. Two years is a long time to wait for a film that most of us know very little about.
