A very low-resolution video was shared on social media outlets. It was apparently a production copy of the actual trailer, with incomplete special effects and CGI. It even had watermarks, which is standard procedure for production content, to ensure that companies and studios can track down the source of unauthorized distribution. As soon as the leak of the trailer was discovered, it was quickly shared over the internet. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms were abuzz with activity, as fans finally got a look at what the Spider-Man: No Way Home movie will feature in terms of story and character development. Despite the low quality of the video, there was enough to get a grasp of what the trailer would include. Disney and Sony are locking down hard
Within hours of the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer leak, Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony seemingly mobilized their forces simultaneously to take down the offenders. Social media accounts have been blacklisted and copyright strikes issued on sites that uploaded the trailer, pictures, screenshots, and/or revealed key elements from it.

Thus, it is highly recommended not to share any details about the leaked Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. With so much hype being built around the highly anticipated third Marvel Studios and Sony collaboration featuring the Tom Holland version of the Wall-Crawler, it is understandable that the two biggest companies in the entertainment industry are being extremely protective with any leaked information and those violating their security.
Tom Holland Reacts
It is surprising that the leak did not come from the one person that usually commits this in the past: Tom Holland himself. The actor had built a somewhat notorious reputation for accidentally mentioning details about MCU films that he would be appearing in, whether it is the Spider-Man films or the Avengers-centric ones. Although this new leak is not one of his mishaps, the actor did share a rather cryptic post in his Instagram stories: What could this mean? Fans have speculated that the actor is reacting to the trailer leak, hinting that the fandom should be prepared for the actual trailer. Or it could mean the trailer is not ready yet. Regardless of what the actor means to say, MCU fans have become even more excited in getting the official trailer release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
What we do know about Spider-Man: No Way Home
Although there has been no official teaser or full trailer so far of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we do have official information based on what has already been revealed, as well as rumors and speculation. The story will be picking up with the repercussions from the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which had Peter Parker’s secret identity exposed and being blamed for the terrorist attack using Tony Stark’s E.D.I.T.H. drones that were under the control of Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Most of the cast from the previous MCU Spider-Man films (Homecoming and Far From Home) will be reprising their roles. One notable addition is Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange. Spider-Man: No Way Home is rumored to be a jumping-off point leading to the Master of the Mystic Arts’ own future solo film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness directed by Sam Raimi. Doctor Strange in a Spider-Man film might seem like an odd combination, but it is consistent with the comics. Strange is one of the few people aware of Spider-Man’s dual identity as Peter Parker. In fact, Peter had approached Doctor Strange for assistance after the events of the comics version of Civil War that wreaked havoc on Spidey’s personal life, due to publicly revealing his secret identity. Later stories such as One More Day and One Moment in Time tried to change this status quo, but with mixed fan reactions. Aside from Cumberbatch, it has been confirmed that Alfred Molina and his Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 (2004) will be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In addition, Jamie Foxx has also been rumored to be reprising his role as Electro from Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). There is also word that J.K. Simmons will be returning to expand his role as J. Jonah Jameson who appeared at the end credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Of course, the biggest rumors surrounding the upcoming film are that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be returning as their versions of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Although no actual confirmation from the actors or the studios and productions involved have been publicly been made, the fans have been very vocal about their suspicions that this is the big surprise for the movie.
So… when is the official Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer releasing?
To this date, there is no official word from Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures on when the first official trailer or teaser of Spider-Man: No Way Home is being released, even though the Marvel Phase Four entry is being released in a few months. However, there is some speculation that there might be something upcoming during the week of CinemaCon. Cinemacon is running from August 23 to 26, 2021 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The event is held for the largest movie theater owners in the globe, with exclusive looks at upcoming big films from the most successful movie studios.

Although the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer would likely be part of this CinemaCon presentation, there is no guarantee that it will be released publicly immediately thereafter. In the past, Marvel Studios did release official trailers soon after leaks hit the internet and social media. Will Sony Pictures follow suit this time? There is a first for everything, and with the low-quality trailer already out there, that might be enough motivation for Sony Pictures to release the true official trailer and begin building up the hype for the movie after it is revealed at CinemaCon. For now, we can simply keep an eye out for more official word from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures (or for more leaks, if any). Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts.
