NetherRealm Studios has worked on more than a dozen Mortal Kombat games at this point. But, you can argue that the series reached its peak in the first few games, with the latest series of reboots beginning with 2011’s Mortal Kombat. After NetherRealm confirmed that it had finished working on Mortal Kombat 11 last year, NetherRealm Studios producer Jonathan Anderson posted an image on Twitter that hid a particularly interesting detail. The since-deleted post shows promotional materials and concept art from NetherRealm’s previous projects, but if you look closely at the upper right part, you can see a partially obscured piece of art that warns not to “share any part of this video” and that “fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace”. Meanwhile, there are a handful of files on the desktop, including “MK12_Mast…” and “Reptile” that feel too on the nose for something that isn’t intentional. Ultimately, this is all just speculation, but we wouldn’t be surprised if NetherRealm is actively working on NetherRealm. Last year we found out that NetherRealm might be prioritizing Mortal Kombat 12 over Injustice 3 because it sells more. Not to mention, a potential roster leak back in December drew mixed reactions from fans because Mortal Kombat 12 won’t be bringing too many new characters to the roster. Anderson’s image addresses this by adding Reptile, the acid-spitting fan-favorite who originally debuted as a secret character in the original Mortal Kombat game from 1992. Considering that audiences thought that NetherRealm would announce its new game at TGA 2021, it makes sense for the studio to start teasing Mortal Kombat 12 with a potential reveal within the next few months. Who knows? Now that Warner Bros has officially confirmed the Mortal Kombat sequel, NetherRealm has the perfect opportunity to announce Mortal Kombat 12 ahead of its rumored release date next year.
