The much-ported 2013 title owes a lot of its success to Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These three games are all responsible for turning the GTA franchise into one of the most popular, and also the most controversial, games of all time. Now, modern audiences will be able to finally play these classic titles in all their remastered glory.
When is the GTA Remastered trilogy coming?
Before anything, full disclosure: neither Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed the following, yet. With that said, the source of the most recent bit of information about the remasters is very much legitimate. This new report comes courtesy of Kotaku, which claims it has sources suggesting that Rockstar Games is working on remastering the three aforementioned Grand Theft Auto games. Furthermore, Kotaku adds that the remasters are expected to release in fall 2021 with a long list of supported platforms that include the Nintendo Switch. If this is true, it would coincide with a previous statement from Take-Two Interactive itself, that it is working on three unannounced remasters that are all set to release on or before 2022. The Kotaku report also explains that it can “confirm via corroborating details from three sources that GTA remasters are currently in the final stages of development”. Having said that, an announcement from Rockstar Games seems overdue. A fall 2021 release for the GTA remasters would coincide with the release date of Grand Theft Auto 5 for the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, as well as the free, standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online. Of course, as we’ve pointed out earlier, the GTA Remastered trilogy would very much explain Take-Two Interactive’s sudden DMCA takedown spree.
What’s next for the Grand Theft Auto series?
Take-Two Interactive hasn’t exactly been shy of admitting its desire to work on remasters of the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games. All three mainline Grand Theft Auto games that were released back in the 2000s are widely considered some of the best games of their respective generations. They all have memorable protagonists, storylines, and gameplay. It is these elements that helped cement the GTA franchise’s spot at the forefront of mainstream consciousness. If the GTA remastered trilogy does indeed release within the next couple of months, then Rockstar Games will have thrown gamers a sizable bone as they wait for GTA 6, which isn’t expected to release until 2025.
